The Sterile Processing Technician, Lead assis tsthe OR staff in theorganization and daily function of the operating ro omin accordance withestablished federal, state, accreditation standards and facilitypolicies and procedures. Responsible for instrument decontam ination,sterile processing, instrument care, safe handling procedures an ddocumentation related to those activities.

The Sterile Processing Technician, Lead will be responsible forper forming the responsibilities outlined in any/all of the categoriesbelow. Operating Room Liaison:Assists the operating room staff in preparing the O.R. suite for surgeryby assisting in instrument preparation.Works coope ratively with OR and Central Sterile to jointly resolveissues or develop better services for surgical implementation.Supports staff by ensuringco mmunication with Central Sterile and ORstaff helps ensure all instrument s are available for surgery.Must be able to resolve issues or offer alte rnatives when necessary.Facilitates action required to obtainadditional instruments duringsurgeryVerifies that required instrumentation has bee n sterilized and isavailable for next-day, call or weekend cases.Address es issues in communication/procedures by proactively reviewing ORschedul e and suggesting modifications to ensure clear and precisecommunication and actions with all affected departments.Responds to problem calls from OR.Transports sterilized instrumentation to the O.R. area as needed.Doc uments and sends broken instrumentation out for repair.Completes documen tation as required for instrument sets, etc (Case Cart,Post Case, andTra y Audits)Responds to problem calls from ORMeets with and works with OR s taff and surgeons as required.Site Lead:Assists in prioritizing processi ng of instruments and equipment forsurgical procedures to facilitateturn over of cases.Anticipates instrument needs for following day and assures sterileprocessing completion.May assist the operating room staff inprep aring the O.R. suite forsurgery by assisting in instrument preparation.A cts as HLD Specialist. Performs/assists with daily quality testingonequi pment in SPD.Assists supervisor in day-to-day activities to include answ ering phonesand daily staff assignment sheet.Communicates closelywith st aff members concerning instrumentrequirements and availability.Verifies that required instrumentation has been sterilized and isavailablefor nex t-day, call or weekend cases.Documents broken instrumentation. Completes documentation as requiredfor instrument sets, etc (Case Cart, Post Case , and Tray Audits). Mayassist in sending broken equipment out for repair .Manages needs list for tray inventoryMakes sure bio's are processed and ready in a timely mannerSPM/Quality Auditor:Verify sterilization docume ntation foraccuracy.Track and monitor IUSS loads anddocumentation.Track and monitor tray errors.Check in vendor trays for the next daycases.Aid s with exporting Quality Events for reporting.Maintains SPM tracking sys temwhich includes by not limited to: updatesinstrumentation,create new products, update count sheets.Aids in completing in servicesfor new prod ucts or processes.Aids in locating trays to place new inventory received .Liaison between the Clinic Leads and Sterile Processing toensureinstrum ent inventory is accuratePreceptor:Orients and mentors newstaff.Shares k nowledge with co-workers through open communication andcontinuous upgrad ing of skills.Conducts random audits on trays assembled bynew staff.Cond ucts first stage re-education with techs on tray errors.Performs real ti me in-services with SPD staff.Performs Sterile ProcessingTechnician job responsibilities when needed.Serves as aresource by guiding newand curr ent team members toappropriate. resource materialsAssist with annual com petency checklist.All roles:Provides a safe environmentfor patients and staff through identifying/correcting/reporting healthand safety hazards. Performs special projects.May assist Supervisor withdepartment supply or ders to includeparticipating in facilitating timelyordering of instrumen tation,supplies and implants.Willingly accepts assignments and performs effectively on a daily basis.Always communicates ina professional manner .Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the application/use ofinstr umentation.Follows standard precautions using PPEas required.Serves as a professional role model to staff.Provides positive leadership.Applies a nd enforces regulations, standards, and hospitalpolicy andprocedures per taining to all areas of sterile processing.Maintains knowledge of operat ion of all equipment in sterileprocessingand reports malfunctions to app ropriate personnel immediately.Responds in a timely manner via phone, te xt and email as needed andperforms needed follow up.Functions in SPD dut ies on an as needed bases, including but not limitedto assembly, sterili zation, and decontamination of instrument traysforORsMay cover areas in Supervisor's absence.Performs other related duties incidental to the wor k described herein.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
K nowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology.Knowledge and understa nding of a variety of OR procedures' surgicalinstruments including worki ng parts and proper inspection.Aptitude for troubleshooting in a high-pa ced environment.
High School Diploma or Equivalent Employees hired into this job code before 2/18/19 are not required to have high school diploma or equivalent
2 years as a Sterile Processing Technician required.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Certification required as CSPDT (CBSPD) or CRCST (IAHCSMM). Additional certification preferred in at least one of the areas below: Sterile Processing Management - C.S.P.M or Healthcare Leadership - CHL Sterile Processing Department Technician - C.S.P.D.T or Registered Central Service Technician - CRCST Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist - C.S.I.S or Instrument Specialist - CIS Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (GI Scope) - C.F.E.R or Endoscope Reprocessor - CER
