Registered Nurse (New Grad & SNIP) – Emergency Department - Duke University Health System – Nights OR Days


Duke University Health System (DUHS) is comprised of 3 Emergency Departments (described below). This interview day will allow candidates to interview with TWO DUHS hospitals on one day.  The interview day will be comprised of a presentation from each DUHS entity ED and prescheduled interviews for a time period later in the afternoon.  Candidates are expected to attend the presentation and interviews on the date listed below.

  • Start Date for these positions: February 28, 2021 (or later based on cohort and hospital)
  • This position prefers graduates with graduation dates from: October 2021 – January 2022
  • Virtual Interviews for this position will be held on: October 12, 2021 between 3:00pm to 8:30pm EST (alternate interview dates are not available at this time due to cohort interview format).

Unit Description

Duke University Hospital is a level 1 trauma center in Durham, NC.  The Emergency Department at Duke University Hospital is comprised of 81 total beds including 18 Pediatric beds/36 Adult Monitored beds/8 Psychiatric beds/11 Evaluation beds/3 Consult beds/4 Triage beds/1 Sexual Assault Examiner Room/ and a dedicated central telemetry station.

Duke Raleigh Hospital is a medium sized community based hospital located in Raleigh, NC. Duke Raleigh Hospital’s Emergency Department is a 36-40 bed unit (growing to a 50 bed unit by EOY 2023) - serving the adult population (transfer pediatric trauma once stable).

Unit Description

Duke Regional Hospital is a medium sized Community based hospital located in Durham, NC.  Duke Regional Hospital’s Emergency Department is a 49 bed unit serves the adult population (transfer pediatric once stable) with an additional 12 bed Clinical Decision Unit and 18 bed Behavioral Health Unit. 

Program Description

This specialized training program (SNIP) is specifically geared towards new graduate nurses. This selectively structured, 26-week orientation provides extensive clinical exposure combined with classroom lectures to help nurses better understand emergency services. A team of preceptors supports SNIP trainees through a two-year signed commitment, where engagement and support extend well beyond the formal six-month active program

This new graduate orientation program is complimentary of a traditional new graduate experience while coupled with specially selected didactic trainings to support the new graduate RN. This structured, 12-week orientation provides extensive clinical exposure combined with classroom lectures to help nurses better understand emergency services for a community based ED center. A dedicated of preceptor supports new graduate through orientation, where engagement and support extend well beyond the formal 12-week experience.

Full Time: Days (7a-7p) OR Nights (7p-7a)

Job Summary:
As a Clinical Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a patient-centered atmosphere. The Clinical Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities. Utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the nursing department. Plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care for patients in guided by DUHS Professional Practice model participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects or other health related projects as assigned. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Adheres to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program is required.  All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 80 Hours in ED Rotation in a teaching and/or trauma center
  • ED Externship/Capstone or Preceptorship
  • Experience working previously as ED Tech, CNAI or CNAII or PSA/PCA in the Emergency Department
  • Candidates with EMT/Paramedic/Medic Experience
  • October 2021 - January 2022 Graduation Date Preferred

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required by start date.
  • BLS (or higher) certification required.
  • Professional specialty certification (preferred)
