Occ Summary

Perform daily clinical operations of Echocardiogr aphy includingperforming Echocardiograms, entering preliminary interpret ation,covering all sites and shifts including call coverage.

Work Performed

Perform routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, andreport any equipm ent malfunction to echo lab manager.Analyze patient's medical record to obtain history of symptoms andnecessary information for performance of d iagnostic procedures.Prepares preliminary reports for review and interpr etation byCardiologist, including comparison of previous studies.Partici pate in quality improvement activities; evaluate procedureresults for te chnical quality and accuracy; maintain appropriate logs,files, and recor ds. Functions as an expert re source, toinstruct other cardiac sonographers with in-services and educa tionregarding performance and preliminary interpretation of theseprocedu res.Performs quality assurance to ensure that all the necessaryechocardi ography data are obtained for the patient on the basis ofclinical histor y andpresentation. Formulating and ensuring consistentimplementation o f exam protocols.Provides in-service education and case reviews for staf f cardiacsonographers in collaboration with the Echocardiography Technic alManager concerning new methods and techniques that areto beincorporat ed into the echocardiography exam.Maintains up to date all laboratory po licies and procedures.Collaborates with Technical Manager and Medical Di rector for reviewannually, or as necessary for revision of all clinical policies andprocedures specific to Echocardiography.Ensures all ICAEL re quirements are met and maintained. Staffinformation, CMEs, policies an d procedures, protocols, etc. are updatedannually to meet ICAEL requirem ents. Staff is updated on all ICAELchanges. Organizes and prepares ICA EL application to maintain anaccredited status.Education FocusParticipat es as a Lead Clinical Instructor in the EchocardiographyDepartment.Parti cipates in clinical education for students, residents and/orfellows spec ifically related to physics and image acquisition.Provides technical ass istance in research studies on newechocardiography techniques and techno logy initiated by Duke, otherhospitals and vendors through attending mee tings and learning newtechniques on acquiring images.Assists Echocardiog raphy Technical Manager with quality measures andoutcome data to ensure a high level echocardiography lab.Clinical Lead FocusSupervisory Respons ibility-YesSupport for the Echocardiography service when themanager is u navailable. The Clinical Lead is responsible forsupervising, directing, coaching, and mentoring their assigned coregroup of staff.Evaluates sta ff, provides feedback, documents and directly monitorsquality performanc e at each site.Directs orientation, provides guidance, and constructivel y influencesstaff morale. Instruct and educate visiting students, techno logists andphysicians about our procedures, computers and departmental f unctions.Provides Echo technical direction/functional advice and directs upervision to staff. Interacts and communicates with physicians,support staff, and other health care professionals to facilitatedepartmental op erationsMonitors the status of equipment repairs and preventative mainte nance,gathers data on equipment malfunction and associated down time, an ddocuments the effects on patient care. Assures compliance withdepartme nt and institutional policies, procedures, and regulations.Assist with s ite specific personnel functions including hiring, annualevaluations, de velopment & implementation of existing departmentalpolicies. Coordinate staff scheduling, and maintain payroll timereports.Communicates informat ion to staff in support management decisions.Assist the Technical Manage r in evaluation and selection of capitalequipment.Enhance professional g rowth and development of department staff throughleadership participatio n in educational programs, current literature,in-service meetings and wo rkshops.Maintain working knowledge of resources available to the departm ent andemployees in developing work skills, employee benefits, continuin geducation and assuring that hospital requirements are met.

Minimum Qualifications


Graduate of an accredited formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Technology Program is required (may substitute with ARDMS certification on or before December 31, 2000).


None required beyond above education/certification requirements. Level I - Must obtain ARDMS or CCI certifications Echocardiography as required by each entity within 18 months of employment. Level II - Minimum of two years' experience as a Sonographer. Level III - A minimum of four years' experience (within specialty modality) in which they are seeking promotion.
